INFORMATION SOURCES, DATA LITERACY AND MANAGEMENT IN BOOK PUBLISHING

Jacob Olugbemiga AKANBI and Clement Adeniyi AKANGBE, Ph.D.

Book publishing is information-based, and various sources of information abound in the publishing environment. Books are products of information and books also disseminate information. The book consumes information for its existence and also serves as sources of information to other users. Manuscripts, which are books in-embryo, are generated through data from different information sources. For effective manuscript generation, preparation and production, data literacy is required by publishers, not only to obtain information from rightful sources but also to process and manage the information obtained well. Preliminary investigation has shown that many publishing firms suffer from poor knowledge of data literacy while others have insufficient awareness of the information sources for publishing activities. Perhaps, of greater concern is poor management of data and information obtained which lead to poor publishing products. It is in the light of this, therefore, that this study focuses on information sources, data literacy and management in book publishing.
