MANAGING LIBRARY RESOURCES AND STATE OF THE ART LIBRARY AUTOMATION SOFTWARE PACKAGES: CHALLENGES FORNIGERIAN LIBRARIES

Managing library resources has been the major preoccupation of librarians. With the exponential increase in the number of print resources, the need to organise these resources for easy and broader access to them becomes manifest. Various schemes were developed and many services initiated by librarians to effectively manage the resources and place them within the reach of the users. The emergence of new technologies and its application to the organisation of library resources has provided an effective, easy and means of more access to these resources and resources of other libraries. The paper examined the challenges experienced with the use of state of the art library automation packages in managing library resources in Nigeria. It highlights technologies like the computer, software and emergence of library software packages, the Internet and the ability to access these packages, form collaborations and share resources. These are greatly impacting on library resources management even those resources many distances away. The various kinds of Library Integrated Software packages and Library Services Platforms available today and the historical evolution of the packages used in Nigerian libraries were examined. The major challenges which are still affecting the use or non-use of these packages and the impacts were also discussed.
